The widespread presence of chronic stress and burnout among humanitarians reflects the profound mental and physical impact of the work, whilst also affecting the quality of support provided to populations in need.
Although exposure to suffering and stressors may be unavoidable, what can be controlled is how you react to these stressors, and the toll they take on your wellbeing. Knowing the causes and symptoms of stress is helpful but seldom sufficient. True resilience requires specific skills, and these skills can be learned.
Contemplative-Based Resilience (CBR) Training is an experiential skills-building programme, grounded in cutting-edge research on human resilience. Through its integrated approach incorporating Psychosocial education, Mindful Movement and Meditation, the training supports humanitarians to develop the practices and habits to enhance personal resilience and thrive within their work.
This is a 12 month programme beginning with a 4 day training retreat in Naivasha, Kenya. Following the retreat, participants will benefit from 12 months of ongoing remote support via the CBR Mobile App and Monthly Support Circle Calls with other aid workers and experienced CBR faculty.
Though the CBR programme, humanitarians will gain:
- An increased understanding of the psychology and physiology of stress.
- Techniques to understand your own sources of stress and its impact in daily life.
- Increased awareness of thoughts, emotions and body reactions, improving emotional regulation and stress management.
- Tools and knowledge to create your own actionable stress management plans.Practical contemplative-based resilience skills including meditation and mindful movement
- Connection and peer support with other humanitarian aid workers
The retreat will be held at the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort, situated just 90 minutes’ drive from Nairobi in the heart of Kingongo Game Reserve, close to Lake Naivasha. The venue is surrounded by open nature, providing much space for relaxation. Comfortable accommodation will be provided, in addition to daily fresh meals.
